AMROA was established in 2010 to develop an Australasian group of medical practitioners who have a special interest in workplace A&OD programs with an emphasis on the medical review of testing methodology and results. AMROA uses the term “Medical Review Officer” (MRO) to describe those medical practitioners who have undertaken appropriate training and assessment and have met the AMROA requirements. AMROA believes that A&OD programs are more effective and provide the highest standards of quality and assurance when the MRO role is integrated into the program.
Medical Review Officers
MROs are registered medical practitioners who have knowledge and understanding of:
- substance abuse disorders and their management
- A&OD testing procedures and methodologies
- interpretation of test results including alternative medical explanations for laboratory confirmed test results as well as issues relating to adulterated and substituted specimens
- pharmacology of illicit drugs
- ethical and privacy issues surrounding workplace drug and alcohol testing
- laboratory methodology and quality control
- legislation and recommended standards as they relate to A&OD programs
- fitness for work and other medical related safety issues
What value does the MRO add to an Alcohol and Drug Program?
An MRO can add value by:
- Assisting organisations to identify risk and manage those employees affected by substance abuse disorders. The MRO can provide valuable advice in the development of a quality A&OD program.
- Ensure the integrity of A&OD testing and interpretation of results of testing. This provides assurance to the organization that testing is effective in managing risk and at the same time, giving employees the confidence that testing will be fair with correct interpretation of results, and maintaining appropriate confidentiality.
- Assist with the return to work of employees following treatment and assessment, while at the same time ensuring safety and fitness for duty.
